Updated BSE import rule proposed

THE U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) said it is seeking public review and comments on a proposal to complete efforts to modernize the agency's import regulations for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). If the proposed rule, which was published in the March 16 Federal Register, is finalized, import regulations for BSE would be more science based, said Dr. John Clifford, APHIS deputy administrator and chief veterinary officer. As a result, commodities that are now restricted but pose no risk for BSE could be imported. Commodities that present a risk for BSE — for example, live animals — would continue to be restricted.
