Painting with Fire: The Art of Enameling in Mid-Century America

Harold Nelson, Director of The Long Beach Museum of Art, and Bernard Jazzar, Curator of Decorative Arts, originated Painting with Fire to trace the development of the enamel arts movement in this country from 1930 to 1970. Painting with Fire explores, in depth, the work of artists who played a major role in advancing work in the medium during this period. Painting with Fire also explores the role of cultural and educational institutions; the role played by major corporations; the populist foundations underlying the enamel arts movement; and the fragmentation and ultimate marginalizing of the enamel artist movement in the late 20th century. Painting with Fire is the first exhibition in over thirty years to present an in-depth exploration of the mid-century American enamel arts movement.
