Fill gaps with fuchsias

Fuchsias come into their own in late summer, flowering profusely until November. FRAN SHALL shares some planting ideas for containers and borders. You get a lot of flower for your money with a fuchsia. Hardy ones live for ever, more or less, and tender ones will bloom for five months or so before being recycled on your compost heap. And you'll only pay around a fiver for a plant bursting with buds, so there should be no hesitation over whether to buy - save any indecision for which varieties to choose. And what a choice you have. Tender and hardy, singles and doubles, many with attractive foliage... you get the picture, I'm sure. Tender fuchsias offer instant colour; hardy types will appear year after year. For baskets and pots whose contents change every year, choose tender fuchsias; for borders and permanent planting in containers, choose hardy ones. Singles have smaller flowers than doubles, but more of them. In a windy garden, they're the best choice - the doubles are more showy but a gust ofwind wreaks havoc, quickly parting huge heads from slender stalks.
