Tradition-bound or anchored?

I love ranching's traditional lifestyle - the independence, work ethic, adherence to a code, and the rigid and yet nonjudgmental view of the world. I also marvel at the people in this business and what they represent. They're what I aspire to be. I'veattended many gatherings of other professions but never found the passion agriculture seems to imbue. I love the traditions of our business, from the chant of an auctioneer, to the feel of a good horse under you, to the thrill of seeing young calves andgreening grass in the spring. Tradition makes our industry unique and special, but also sets it apart. In that regard, tradition is one of our greatest strengths. Recently, a very progressive producer told me this industry worships tradition to the extent that it deals harshly with those who think outside the box. I don't totally agree with his assessment.
