Chinese orange industry eyes bright future: While still in its developmental stages, China's Navel orange industry sees bright export prospects ahead

IN 2004, China produced more than 1m tonnes of Navel oranges, with the majority of production coming from five key regions across the country. China leportedly has around 134,000ha planted with Navel oranges. The core production bases include Ganzhouin Jiangxi province, which is known as Gannan, Fengjie in Sichuan Province, Zigui in Hubei Province, Changshan in Zhejiang Province and Fuchuan in Guangxi Province, As the largest Navel production area in China, Gannan's planting area continues to increase at a rate of 13,000ha every year. As of 2004, the total area under Navels in Gannan was estimated at more than 67,000ha. The bearing acreage was put at 2 5,460ha, with production of around 300,000 tonnes, Meanwhile, Fengjie and Zigui each produced around 120,000 tonnes of Navel oranges last year.
