Installation of Ladle Furnace unit at Durgapur Steel Plant--its impact on Steel Ladle Refractories

Durgapur Steel Plant, an integrated steel plant of Steel Authority of India Limited, is located at Durgapur in West Bengal, India. It used to restrict its production mainly on medium carbon steel grades like C20, C15, C-25, SWR etc through BOF-VAD-Concast route. Now a day, market has dictated steel making processes for producing special and quality steels. To be in the competitive market, Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) installed some new equipment in recent past One of them at steel melting complex is ladle furnace (LF). As a matter of fact, metallurgical load on refractories lining, particularly on steel ladle, has increased due to adoption of refining process. Presently most of the special quality steels are made through LF. As a result, improvement in quality of lining for steel ladle has become essential. This paper describes the modification made in lining design of steel ladle for improvement in lining life as well as availability with ladle furnace in operation.
