Russia's two largest aluminum producers, Rusal and Sual, agreed in early October 2006 to combine their operations, and Switzerland-based Glencore joined the agreement by adding its alumina-producing assets and one aluminum smelter. The merged company will be called United Company Rusal (UCR) and will become the world's largest alumina and aluminum producer. Current production capacity of UCR will total about 11 million mt/y of alumina and 4 million mt/y of aluminum metal- about 16 percent of global alumina and 12.5 percent of global aluminum capacity.
