AN INTRODUCTIONTO THE R&A GREENKEEPING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

In the January edition of the Bulletin, I mentioned R&A support of greenkeeper education around the world. I referred to our Greenkeeping Scholarship Programme, but this deserves more "air time", so this article is dedicated to providing more information on what The R&A offers in its scholarship package.The R&A awarded its first Greenkeeping Scholarship in 2004 to a Chinese girl studying at Elmwood College (now SRUC Elmwood). Since then, The R&A has been awarding scholarships at two colleges in the UK; SRUC Elmwood (Fife) and Myerscough (Lancashire). Inthat time, we have supported over 180 students undertaking higher level education (HNC and above). Approximately 60% of these students are from outside Great Britain & Ireland with 20 different countries represented including China, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, India, Nepal, Slovenia, South Africa and the USA. R&A Scholars are often the highest achievers on their courses and, to date, The R&A has contributed over E550,000 towards funding their higher education.
