Lowering the Cost of Iron Production: Improving Operating Cost Margins without Capital Cost Exposure Pulverized Coal Injection for Sparrows Point

DTE Energy Services develops, finances, owns, and operates coke-making, cogeneration, backup generation, pulverized coal injection, and other large industrial energy facilities. Raytheon Engineers & Constructors designs, procures, and constructs large projects for a broad range of industrial processes. BMH Claudius Peters AG provides grinding and injection technology, experience, and equipment of iron-making facilities throughout the world. These three firms have again collaborated to construct a pulverized coal injection plant. This is the second such project for this team in the last three years. The first project, which began injection in December of 1996, provides pulverized coal to the three blast furnaces at National Steel's Great Lakes Division. The current project will provide pulverized coal to Bethlehem Steel Corporation's 10, 000-ton/day blast furnace located as Sparrows Point, Maryland. Construction is underway with start-up scheduled for the second quarter of 2000.
