Majority of Oil in US Gulf Spill Disappears

US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that the fight to contain the US Gulf of Mexico oil spill seemed to be nearing an end as BP reported that the first part of a two-phase operation to permanently plug the ill-fated Macondo well had gone according to plan. Meanwhile, government scientists said that 74% of the oil that had gushed from the well was no longer present in concentrated form in the Gulf because it had either been scooped up, had evaporated or had been broken down by natural processes.
