Cost effectiveness in specialist palliative care.

We were pleased to read December's editorial highlighting the importance of demonstrating cost effectiveness in specialist palliative care-we agree that to not do so is simply outdated (Mula and Raftery, 2011). This is a key message of the National Council for Palliative Care and Help the Hospice's recent publication 'Are You There? Reviewing specialist palliative care inpatient admissions criteria' (available via www.ncpc.org.uk/ news/72), which aims to stimulate debate about the role and availability of specialist palliative care inpatient services and their relationship to other services.
