The personal is political: Gender stereotypes in the unconscious life of groups: Commentary on 'consciousness-raising in a gender conflict group'

The anthem of third wave feminism—the personal is political-captured the focus of what has come to be characterized as the "feminist revolution" of the 1980s. It developed out of earlier stages of women's protest against patriarchal hegemony implicated in the economic, psychological, political, and social conditions of women's lives. The "personal is political" is the undercurrent of the article "Consciousness-Raising in a Gender Conflict Group" written by Daphna Joel and Dana Yarimi (this issue). The authors explore male domination through their examination of gender stereotypes of what is normative for men and women and as it operates in significant, albeit unconscious, ways in the life of groups. Gender stereotypes, the authors contend, affect the structure and nature of interpersonal interactions in groups and the larger world. They examine the hegemony of patriarchal authority in shaping the dynamics of group process.
