Studies on the clinical, haematological effect of diazepam-lignocaine hydrochloride combination in horse under surgical stress

Ten Indian horses, weighing an average 320 kg, aged 3 to 3.5 years, were administered atropine sulfate i.m. (0.01 mg/kg body weight) 30 min before i.v. administration of diazepam (0.4 mg/kg body weight). Lignocaine hydrochloride [dose not given] wasalso administered locally [i.m.?]. Blood samples were collected before and 0.5, 1, 2, 6 and 24 h after diazepam administration. Heart rate, respiration rate and rectal temperature were recorded before, and 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 180 min, and 24 h after diazepam. None of the parameters measured were significantly changed by administration of diazepam, apart from packed cell volume, which had returned to pre-anaesthetic levels 24 h after administration.
