The operations of SMA Magnesium AS are part of the huge Heroya industrial park in Porsgrunn, south-west of Oslo, which used to form part of a massive Norsk Hydro factory complex. The SMA Magnesium operations were tormerly operated by Hydro for the production of magnesium metal, however, this capacity was moved to Canada owing to better markets in North America (particularly the automotive industry) and the fact that the Canadian plant had more modern technology. To keep the magnesium production in Norway would have required major investments. The market was also very competitive owing to Chinese exports of magnesium metal.
