South Africa strike, varying IM impact

A 24 HOUR strike on 6 August by 2m. members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), which includes 320,000 members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), has had mixed impact on South African industrial mineral companies. IM understands that miners for phosphate producer, Foskor Ltd, did not go to work, which has affected its 3.6m tpa Phalaborwa plant in north-east South Africa. In anticipation for such an event, Foskor enacted a contingency plan, with external staff and management drafted in to continue production.
