Just imagine being able to say that you drive an Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane. This almost absurdly British confection of syllables was the name of the first brand new British car to emerge after the end of World War Two. It was announced just three days after VE Day. A somewhat triumphalist name, Hurricane was a direct reference to the fighter plane that Hawker Siddeley, of which Armstrong was an offshoot, had been producing for the RAF. The company was not backward in linking what it called "the new conception in British motoring" with the aircraft, whose image was almost as large as the car's in some ads.
