Eertiliser is vital for food security of the country. Increasing use of fertiliser coupled with irrigation water and HYV seeds brought self-ncy in food grain production in the country. India is now the second largest fertiliser consuming country in the world next only to China. The requirement of fertiliser is large and will continue to grow in future. Current consumption of fertiliser nutrients is about 28 million tonnes and in terms of products, it is 58 million tonnes. By the end of 12th Five Year Plan (2016-17), the requirement of fertilisers in terms of total nutrients is projected at 34 million tonnes and in terms of products 69 million tonnes. In addition, the country also needs large amount of secondary and micronutrients to achieve balanced nutrition not only to improve use efficiency of major nutrients but also to improve food quality for better human health.
