Effect of Non-Genetic Factors on Milk Production Performance of Cows in Eastern Region

The records of Jersey crossbreds, Karan Fries and Tharparkar cows were collected from the Institute's herd for milk production, milk composition, fodder and concentrate quantity for a period of eight years. The climatic data was collected for minimumand maximum ambient temperatures and relative humidity. Data was analyzed to find out the effect of non-genetic factors like season, year, month, minimum and maximum ambient temperatures and humidity on milk production performance, fat, SNF, wet and herdaverage of different breeds. Total milk production and the monthly milk yield in all the breeds were significantly influenced (P<0,07) due to variation in quantity of fodder offered to animals (P<0.07). There was no effect of month, year, ambient temperature and the relative humidity on milk production performance of Jersey crossbred and Karan Fries cows, except Tharparkar cow's milk yield which was affected by year and minimum temperature (P<0.01). The wet average performance of cows was significantly(P<0.01) influenced by month, year and minimum temperature, while herd average was affected by the season and minimum temperature (P<0.01) only. There was no effect of high ambient temperature and high humidity on milk production of different breeds dueto adaptation in hot weather. It was concluded that milk production performance is significantly affected by the season and availability of green fodder.
