Twenty-five (T1) and 50% (T2) replacement of concentrate protein by green mulberry leaves (on a DM basis) in the rations of growing buffalo calves (n=12) in a 69-day study indicated superior performance compared with those fed on a conventional ration (T0). T1 calves showed higher daily liveweight gains compared with group T2 or T0. Values for DM intake and its digestibility were similar in all 3 groups. Crude fibre digestibility was higher (P<=0.05) in T1 and T2 than in T0. Rumen ammonia-N declinedas the level of mulberry leaves increased. Volatile fatty acid levels did not show marked differences except that acetic acid level was highest in group T2. The results suggest that N in mulberry leaves can replace a part of concentrate-N.
