Fieldbus systems have made huge inroads into most areas of automation. In safety applications, however, their impact has been more limited. Mark Bates of Hayes Control Systems believes that this is about to change. It is fair to say that a significant proportion of the space in the control cabinets and cable ducts of any modern automation system is taken up by the wiring for safety-related components. This is no surprise as, in almost every case, non-safety field devices will be connected using a fieldbus which reduces the amount of wiring needed, while conventional wiring will be used for the safety systems.
