Air layering to create additional individuals of a desired cultivar or to improve the design of an existing bonsai is a technique attempted by most bonsai enthusiasts at some point in their bonsai career. Much has been written about various layering techniques. The variations are many. Rooting medium, time of application, method of removing or constricting cambium, use of rooting hormones, and rooting medium containment are all subjects of much discussion. Not much guidance is given for care after removal from the mother plant. Since the focus of our interest is bonsai, two after layering suggestions are worth consideration.
