With the recycling and sorting plant for construction waste operated by Amand Umwelttechnik GmbH in Lockwitz/Dresden, a plant concept was developed that enables the production of waste-derived fuels of acceptable quality on the basis of mixed construction site waste, mixed commercial waste and bulk waste. From the mixed construction waste, first the mineral components are removed (for recycling into building materials) and then the remaining waste, such as wood, paper/cardboard/plastics, composite materials, textiles, undergoes multistage processing to permit the appropriate utilization of these waste fractions. With this plant, the two waste objectives specified in the relevant German legislation have been met: the production of storable waste requiring zero aftercare, which is suitable for the backfilling and restoration of opencast mines, and the securing of a cost-efficient and long-term competitive utilization of the other waste including waste leftover from the sorting process. In this paper, the process implemented at the plant is presented and initial experience with the plant operation described.
