The effect of S. platensis and N. muscorum cultures inoculated into effluents from a Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala intensive production system was investigated. It was shown that both cyanobacteria effectively removed ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate and phosphorus from the effluents. S. platensis showed a better removal efficiency compared to N. muscorum, with 92.40 and 83.60% ammonia removal rates, respectively. Nitrite and nitrate removal rates were lower compared to ammonia. While nitrate removal was close to 50.39% by S. platensis at the end of the 7-day experiment, a 40% reduction was observed in N. muscorum at the end of the third day, after which the reduction efficiency decreased to 14.17%. The removal of phosphorus was not as effective as that of nitrogen. Biomass growth rates of S. platensis and N. muscorum on fish culture effluent were 0.11 and 0.10/day, respectively. Chlorophyll a and protein content of both cyanobacteria also increased during culture in fish effluent. In conclusion, both these species have potential for use in fish effluent treatment..
