The intraspecific behavior of sibling species (Microtus arvalis and M. rossiameridionalis) was studied in enclosures of 34 m(2) area. Ten family groups of both species (60 animals) were observed. Interrelations between voles were recorded while they were investigating a new territory, in the familiar area, and in the presence of a stranger conspecific (1260 hours of observations). During the experimental period, animals of M. rossiameridionalis were found to be more socially active with respect to amicable contact than common voles. On the contrary, common voles (M. arvalis) were more aggressive both in intrafamily relations and in their response to strange voles. Males appered to predominate in these common vole groups. The interrelationships between the M. rossiameridionalis groups were more uniform. This species has a more labile behavior and social structure.
