THE adoption of feedlot software technology to collect and analyse data has been one of the critical success factors in boosting productivity in Australian feedlots over the past two decades. Rob Backus recounts record keeping and analysis of feedlotdata was very simplistic prior to feedlot computer software becoming available. At the Caroona Feedlot he used rudimentary handwritten record keeping books. The figures were balanced up every day as if you were a bank teller. In 1982 he ingeniously mounted a two-foot wide Kalamazoo system to the front handlebars of his motorbike to compile daily feedlot data. Then in 1983 the first mainframe IBM computer was installed, complete with its own insulated dust free room and air conditioning system. The new era of Australian feedlot software system was about to begin.
