A group of people is facing mandates from the leaders of government to perform acts against their values. Until recently, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers in the United States were granted what is called the "right of conscience," meaning they could not be compelled to act against their moral principles. Just as military conscientious objectors are granted exemption from killing, others, healthcare providers could "opt out" of being associated with medically repugnant acts based on their personal moral values. There can be negative consequences for opting out, but doing so has been permissible.
