When a virulent strain of porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) was discovered in pigs in the USA in 2013, then subsequently in Canada, alarm bells sounded. The effects are dramatic, with most young suckling piglets dying within five days of becoming ill.Analysis of samples from the UK pig herd by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) showed it was very likely that if there was an outbreak here, most of the pig population would l^e susceptible and epidemic disease would occur.
