Several UK cities are poised to follow Sheffield's lead by introducing 'tram-trains', despite a quadrupling of costs and near three year delay on the South Yorkshire project. Bristol, Cardiff and Glasgow are among those considering tram-trains, where modified street running vehicles also use heavy rail infrastructure. The idea allows lengthy passenger routes to be created without having to build long stretches of line.
