The 3D model of an object can be created in a CAD system and its volume calculated at the press of a button.However,conventional CAD systems cannot be deployed to compute for the volumes of storage tanks,both shore tanks and ship compartments,because the 3D models of these tanks are not readily available.The geometry of tanks needs to be captured and converted to a format that a CAD system can process.Even then,CAD systems are not readily usable because there are extra requirements in these volumes such as accounting for the’deadwood’in the tanks,thermal expansion,and variations due to varying list and trim.Therefore,CCIC has built a stand-alone application specifically for the needs of storage tanks.An object is defined by its bounding faces.Each face is a part of a mathematical surface,such as a plane,cylinder or freeform surface,bounded by a loop of edges.The volume of an object is defined as a triple integral over the object.”We wrote a program that computes this triple integral,producing results that are accurate for the given geometry.The accuracy of the calculation therefore depends on the accuracy of the geometry,”explains CCIC.
