The method involves detecting a level in a fuel tank (2) before filling the fuel tank with fuel e.g. liquid fuel such as diesel. The level in the tank is detected after filling of the fuel, where the flow of fuel is measured during filling. Volume of the fuel is determined based on the measurement of flow of fuel during filling, and the level in the fuel tank after the filling is determined based on the determination of volume of fuel. The level in the tank before filling is determined when fuel consumption of an internal combustion engine (3) is detected. An independent claim is also included for a fuel tank system for a motor vehicle.
