Treatments for Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder CHSDD) and the Pursuit of Sexual Health for Women amidst Inglorious Rhetoric

As evidenced by the articles published in Sexual Medicine Reviews (SMR), clinicians and researchers in the field of sexual medicine have witnessed many advances in the past three decades. Increasing knowledge of the underlying physiology of sexual function and dysfunction has better defined the role of psychotherapy and has supported and complemented the development of efficacious pharmacological and surgical treatments. Contemporary research has established the importance of neuronal, vascular and hormonal regulation of sexual function within the context of interpersonal relationships and sociocultural influences, supporting the biopsychosocial model. However, for those of us in the field of women's sexual health, the reality may fall short of this idealized narrative. In fact, the progression of medical and scientific discoveries supporting safe and effective therapies has been more applicable to men's sexual health with the primary focus on erectile function (insufficient rigidity, priapism, penile curvature) and premature ejaculation.
