When Ross and Julie Mclvor were newlyweds in the 1970s, they bought a small glasshouse for growing summer vegetables. Four decades and half a dozen house moves later, they bought back that same glasshouse with a sultana cake. Once a propagator, alwaysa propagator.Julie and Ross' old hothouse was facing demolition in a Pokeno paddock earmarked for a new subdivision when the developer agreed to give it back to them, in return for a home-made fruit cake. It now sits in the vege patch of their country garden at the foot of Mt William, high in the Bombay Hills. "From our family room, you can see the trig station and all the people on the walkway to the summit," says Julie. Their home is literally on Auckland's southernmost boundary; their neighbours over the road pay their rates to the Waikato District Council.
