Today's military and civilian flight simulators are impressive devices. With eye-popping, computer-generated scenery displayed around replica cockpits, the apparent level of realism is astounding. However, realism runs more than skin-deep. At the heart of the simulator is the flight simulation software, an interconnected collection of mathematical models tasked with the challenge of accurately reproducing the behavior of the actual aircraft. These mathematical models consist of combinations of empirical data and analytical equations that emulate the function of aircraft components ranging from the engines and landing gear to control, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
