Nuclear (radioactive) waste is waste that contains, or is contaminated with, radionuclides at activity concentrations greater than clearance levels established by regulatory organisations. Naturally, radioactive wastes with activity concentrations below those levels are considered non-radioactive, or exempt wastes. The highest hazard for humans and environment is waste with high contents of toxic radionuclides, so-called high-level waste (HLW).
