FROM ZERO DEFORESTATION TO ZERO ILLEGALITY VON NULL-ENTWALDUNG ZU NULL-ILLEGALIT?T

The post-2004 deforestation slowdown in the Brazilian Amazon was strongly influenced by innovative environmental policy changes. Specifically, increased law enforcement options for controlling and combating illegal deforestation and supply chain interventions have promised a path to achieving zero deforestation and sustainable commodity production. This article focusses on the social-ecological implications of the dynamic cattle expansion in Southwest Pará, one of the most active agricultural frontiers in the Amazon. Here, deforestation is far from 'zero', halting illegal cattle production and land speculation remain a challenging task. To strengthen ranchers' capacities to improve rural productivity and sustainable land management the results highlight most of all the importance of reducing land tenure insecurity.
