Politics and palliative care:Chad

The landlocked and largely arid central African Republic of Chad is one of the continent's most mineral rich countries, with large deposits of gold, uranium and oil. Nevertheless, for all its natural abundance, the country is riven with strife and poverty and corruption is rife. Since independence from France in the 1960s, the country has been subject to almost continuous political instability, civil war and insurrection; in more recent times, President Deby, of the Patriotic Salvation Movement, has held power.
