Conventional lithium ion batteries get discharged quite easily because they cannot store much energy. Their charging capacity decreases after a while and they have to be disposed. With the advent of flexible electronic and microelectronic devices, it is a challenge to employ lithium ion batteries because they are bulky. In addition to this, toxicity issues related to these batteries have led to concerns about their safety in medical devices. To overcome these challenges, researchers from Rice University have developed coated nickel-tin nanowire batteries.
