A study on the genetic variability and selection of superior walnut (Juglans regia L.) trees within seedling population of around of Van Lake.

During 1993-95, over 25000 walnut trees with high levels of heterozygosity were examined for yield, percentage lateral fruiting, tolerance of anthracnose [Gnomonia leptostyla] and several nut quality factors. Seedling populations from around Lake Van exhibited wide genetic variation. Some 23 genotypes were selected. In these genotypes average nut weight ranged from 9.36 (?.8) to 18.60 (?.3) g, kernel weight was in the range 6.09 (?.8)-9.58 (?.8) g, kernel ratio ranged from 50.89% to 65.17%, shell thickness was in the range 0.91 (?.1)-1.76 (?.1) mm and nut diameter varied from 29.93 (?.9) to 40.44 (?.3) mm.
