Information on the inheritance of chilling tolerance was studied in 9 cucumber (Cucumis sativus) lines, including 2 chilling tolerant lines (Nongdachunguang and Beijing Cigua) and 2 chilling sensitive lines (Nongdaqouguang and Jinyan 4). The 9 linesand the F1, F2 and backcrossed generations of 6 crosses between the tolerant and sensitive lines were evaluated for leaf area, dry weight of plant and chilling injury index in a greenhouse during 1991. Chilling tolerant offspring did not originate fromchilling tolerant X chilling tolerant crosses, but mainly from chilling tolerant X chilling sensitive crosses. Chilling tolerance was not significantly enhanced by backcrossing to a chilling tolerant parent and was significantly decreased by backcrossingto a chilling sensitive parent. The GCA of chilling tolerant lines was greater than that of chilling sensitive lines, and SCA was greatest in chilling tolerant X chilling sensitive crosses, but there was significant variation among crosses.
