To arrive at Kennedy Odede and Jessica Posner's school for girls in Kiberia, one must cross a small footbridge. The roughhewn wooden planks traverse an open sewer, which are ubiquitous in this sprawling Nairobi slum, one of the largest in Africa. The massive shanty town is officially considered an illegal squat, so receives no public services. What remains is a seemingly endless labyrinth of muddy, unpaved streets, jam-packed scrap metal huts, burned-out lots, and vendors selling fly-covered dried fish. The HIV rate here has been estimated at twice the national average, and one out of five children do not live to see their fifth birthday.
