Ilya Efimovich and Vsevolod Mikhailovich played starring, and complementary, roles in the atmosphere of the pre-Revolutionary Russian literary and artistic aristocracy. Their interwoven paths intersected often, since Repin illustrated several of Garshin's books; Garshin admired and wrote about the circle of artists, the Wanderers, to which Repin belonged—these "traveling exhibitors" were also known as the Itinerants or the Peredvizhniki. Garshin's suicide ended his participation in that rich creative world, yet Repin continued to paint into the 1920s. Repin's influence extended, after his death, into Joseph Stalin's milieu; Stalin idolized Repin as the artist who best typified the Soviet policies of Socialist Realism.
