Kidney attack versus heart attack: Evolution of classification and diagnostic criteria

The diagnosis of a heart attack, inclusive of acute coronary syndromes and myocardial infarction, is based on symptoms, electrocardiogram abnormalities, and biomarkers. In an attempt to engage laypeople and non-experts, the term kidney attack has been introduced to,refer to acute kidney injury (AKI). AKI is a clinical syndrome associated with increased morbidity and mortality, and early recognition is critical.
