A new era in HIV prevention began last week with the approval of a combination pill containing two antiretroviral drugs for use in HIV-negative individuals. David Holmes reports. The long wait for an HIV-prevention pill finally came to an end on July 16, when the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the once-daily combination tenofovir-emtricitabine (marketed as Truvada by Gilead) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV-negative individuals who are at a high risk of sexually acquired HIV infection.
