COLOMBIA IMPORTING COTTON

Colombia became a net importer of cotton in 1992/93. Colombia had been a net exporter of up to 80,000 tons in the mid-1970s and was still a net exporter of 32,000 tons in 1991/92. Production fell 60% in 1992/93 and the country became a net importer for the first time in 34 years. Colombia imported 40,000 tons of cotton in 1993/94 and 52,000 in 1994/95. Between 1991 /92 and 1994/95, planted area fellfromarecord276,000 hectares to 82,000 hectares, and cotton production fell by 112,000 tons to 46,000 tons.
