New York-Delta Air Lines, the nation’s second largest airline, expects jet fuel price volatility to continue through the second quarter, keeping it on the sidelines from hedging fuel price risk, CFO Paul Jacobson said last week. So far, he said jet fuel costs have risen by 60% off lows seen earlier this year. In late January, prompt USGC jet fuel barrels traded at a low of 82.4 cents/gal, according to Platts price assessments. This helped Delta’s first quarter costs, as Delta paid on average $1.33 cents/gal for jet fuel, down 55% from the prior year quarter. “We are very aware that fuel prices remain volatile,” he said on the company’s first quarters earnings call.
