Duvernay condensate climbs, US diluent still needed

Calgary—Alberta’s oil sands producers have started sourcing some 27,000 b/d of condensates from Canada’s Duvernay play, with that figure likely to rise significantly over the longer term with improved well economics and new infrastructure. By 2025, oil sands producers will require over 1 million b/d of condensates, of which 343,000 b/d will come from Duvernay, Callan McMahon, a senior analyst with Wood Mackenzie said in interview. Condensate as a diluent can be mixed with bitumen to make it more viscous and easier to flow through pipelines and travel in tank cars via rail.
