US should lead Arctic drilling dialogue

Washington—Described as probably the most challenging place in the world to drill for oil and natural gas, the Arctic suffers from a patchwork quilt of safety and environmental regulations and a stark lack of infrastructure to deal with a potential oil spill, the Brookings Institution said Wednesday. As the US prepares to assume the chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2015, it should play a leadership role in advocating for stronger oil and gas drilling regulations, the influential Washington-based think tank said in a report, and ensure that council members have adequate resources to implement those standards.Herman Wang
