Nigerian union threatens strike on oil sector reform

Lagos-Nigerian senior oil workers union Pengassan warned December 19 it would call for massive strike action should Nigeria's Parliament pass into law a bill that seeks to radically overhaul the country's oil sector. The union said it would call for action without giving prior notice. Pengassan said in a statement that the Petroleum Industry Bill does not consider the interests of workers on issues such as pensions, job security, particularly in the proposed incorporated joint ventures, expatriate quota abuse and capitalization of state oil company Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, despite various inputs made by the union.
