The UK's second-largest household gas and power supplier by customer-count, Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), said on Thursday it is hiking average prices for gas by 18% and for power by 11% from Sep. 14. That makes SSE the third of the "Big Six" UK suppliers after Centrica and Iber-drola to pass on double-digit price increases to consumers in the past month, although it pledged not to raise prices again before August 2012 (IOD Jul.11'11). All six had already increased prices earlier this year. Rival Iberdrola, which trades as Scottish Power in the UK, said on Thursday that its energy supply margins in the UK in the first half of 2011 were 30% lower year-on-year, but would improve in the fourth quarter because of tariff increases from Aug. 1.
