A US federal court last week sentenced a Venezuelan accountant to 14 months in prison for his part in a Ponzi scheme that saw state Petroleos de Venezuela (PDV) lose an estimated $500 million from its $2.5 billion pension fund. Juan Carlos Guillen Zerpa, 44, was sentenced to 14 months in jail by a Connecticut federal judge Dec. 14 for his role in the scam. Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of more than two years.
